2/1/2024 0 Comments Beer keg still with thumper![]() Most people start running a thumper just to try and avoid double running. Given you seem happy with your double run product.I'd say leave well enough alone unless you just want to do some research. If you are starting to get the idea that it can open up a can of worms you are right. So, there are any number of designs as well that all could impact how things run. LWTCS also has a humper thumper design which is vertical like a plate one on top the other. Along with that.any number of variables such a size, tall vs wide, etc.all play a role in how your thumper will respond. The flavor will also be different depending upon what you use. But, you are only filling it about 1/4 to 1/3 the way. Whether you use wash or low-wines or a mix is up to you. Loading some kind of abv wash and/or low-wines into a thumper will ultimately keep the boiling point of the that of the pot feeding it and this is the situation you want.where one is feeding the other. By the time you get the thumper charged with enough alc and heat to start a 2ndary vapor rise.half your volume is gone and you are already pumping tails into it. This nning it that way on a smaller pot still charged with wash isn't really optimal. But, it also takes longer to build up to temp and it uses some of the volume of your pot to charge the thumper. ![]() Loading your thumper with water.will reduce the proof a bit and make it cleaner/smoother. AT least that was "my" experience.others may have different opinion on it. you will have to double run, at least some, to get it working properly. So, that sort of negated one of the supposed advantages of a thumper (that you dont' have to double run). This meant double running in the first place. When I used one on 5 gal tended to smear and was a bear to get it to work properly UNLESS I used low-wines for the still charge. ![]() It also tends to change the flavor a bit again depending upon what you run in your thumper. This gives you an "aggregate" higher proof cut. In other words.the proof falls slower.and tends to stay within a 5 point range or so for most of the run.and then drops off "suddenly" right at the end of the run. What it mainly does is keep the abv more steady across the run. But, I'll add something.the thumper doesn't really increase your abv all that much (depending upon what you preload the thumper with). If you just want to experiment with one.to see what's what.thats fine too. I'm no master.but in my experience.there really isn't any reason you "need" one particularly if you are happy with the results you are getting.
